Welcome Message

Welcome to the KORAIL Railroad Museum

The history of Korean railways began with the establishment of the Railroad Bureau on June 28, 1894, followed by the opening of the 33.8km section between Incheon and Noryangjin on September 18, 1899.

During the Japanese colonial period, railways were used as a tool for colonial rule and resource exploitation. After independence, despite the pain of war and division, railways played a vital role in national reconstruction and economic development.

The opening of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway on August 15, 1974, marked the beginning of the urban transportation era, and with the launch of the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway (KTX) on April 1, 2004, Korean railways have established themselves as the core infrastructure of 21st-century transportation.

The current Railroad Museum opened on January 26, 1988, and serves as a center for railway culture where the breath of railway history shared with our people can be felt. The museum awaits you with over 12,000 artifacts and various materials in both indoor and outdoor exhibition halls.

The Railroad Museum has been a place of nostalgic memories for adults and a site for useful education and experiential learning for children and youth. Recently, it has gained popularity as a space where visitors can relax with family, relatives, and loved ones amidst an excellent natural environment.

The Railroad Museum will continue to secure and exhibit high-quality collections and contribute to the local community and the railway industry through various programs. Furthermore, we will strive to provide the best experience to our visitors and emerge as a representative museum of South Korea.

Thank you.
Director of KORAIL Railroad Museum
